...The three boat traces revealed in the upper strata relate not only to fishing activities but also to the development of a communication net among the neighboring settlements, many of which have been traced on the lakeshore.
A wide corpus of pottery that is based on the observed typological variation is continuously enriched as the on-going conservation and recording project restores almost complete vessels from the abundant sherds. The study of coarse and fine pottery is crucial for the comprehension of food-preparation and food-consuming habits, the full description of storage practices and the determination of the exploited clay resources. Furthermore, fine pottery is undoubtedly a field where the Neolithic craftsman showed an impressive technical dexterity. The pottery restoration project has yielded a great number of different forms, a fact that reflects a remarkable ability to cope with the raw material and on the other hand implies a high level of specialization. Mentionable are the arduous shapes of four-legged cooking vessels, open, long-legged bowls (‘fruit-stands’) and boat-shaped pots.
Numerous ‘non-functional’ elements and artifacts consist the field of ideology: the decorated pottery with incised, painted and plastic motives or with the depiction of human characteristics on their clay surface, the clay figurine corpus, which shows an impressive variety, from the typical Neolithic ‘bird-shaped’ figurines to an oversized naturalistic seated female reminding the relevant finds from Anatolia, the shell, clay, stone and shell personal adornment implements. Additionally, special attention should be given to the bone flutes and the early communication efforts with inscriptions organized on a wooden tablet and other clay ones. Finally, two human skeletons and three other children burials in clay vessels were found at the Western Sector of the excavation, while human bone fragments are also found mixed in the bone material of the Eastern Sector...
